Balikbayans, particularly Overseas Filipino Workers [OFWs] deployed in the hot Saudi Arabian peninsula, might enjoy this coco-fruity dessert once they visit the Philippines. Coconut freshly cut in half serves as a dessert bowl full of cut tropical fruits. Pineapple, papaya, and watermelon are sprinkled with muscovado sugar.

This fresh and healthy dessert is served at Ka Lui’s Restaurant, a good place to relax after visiting one of the seven wonders of nature located in Palawan province—the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River.

Let’s bring Alfredo Salmos home

Here is a video of Alfredo Salmos, an Overseas Filipino Worker [OFW] survivor that allegedly got electrocuted by 14,000 volts of electricity.

He is currently seeking help to return home to the Philippines.

In a video uploaded on Youtube, Salos can be seen badly scarred. Crying, he is asking help from Philippine authorities for help. Salos says that even if he has no money, he wants to go home. He is allegedly from Nueva Ecija.

English as a second language in Saudi Arabia has gotten more essential as the Kingdom embraces modernization and globalization.

The English language is setting a firmer foothold in everyday conversation among locals. In fact English language schools witness enrollment of Saudi Arabia’s younger generation. Affluent families send their children to schools and universities in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. The Saudi government actually sends its students overseas and funds their tuition fees.

As a number of Overseas Filipino Workers [OFWs] in Jeddah fly back home this time syncing their approximately one-month vacation with the long summer break in the Philippines, OFWs remaining in this coastal city of Saudi Arabia can also have their bay or beach weekends by the Red Sea.

Taken by Merna, a blogger, her picture shows the blue waters of the Red Sea lapping the huge rock lining along the Corniche. Many Filipinos go here for a leisurely walk along the bay across from the towering hotels and restaurants on the other side of the road. Sometimes, they drive farther to Obhur to swim at a beach for free together with other Asian expatriates and locals.

For many Overseas Filipino Workers [OFWs] in Saudi Arabia, Boracay is a topnotch beach get-away when they arrive in the Philippines for vacation, as Boracay is considered one of the best beaches in the world.

However, there is another beach in the Visayan necklace of islands that has been named as one of the “Best Secret Beaches on Earth.” Travel+Leisure, a known travel magazine in New York chose Panglao Island in the Bohol province as one of the 15 best on its online list.

“There are still undiscovered beaches out there—blissful hideaways where tourism hasn’t yet eclipsed the local culture,” said David Keeps, a travel writer. “There’s more to do, for those so inspired, than loll on the sand.”

One of the fascinating cultural dances in the Philippines comes from the Islamic region in the island of Mindanao.

Singkil, the Maranaos’ version of Ramayana, an Indian epic, shows the skillful and agile feet of a performer crisscrossing bamboo poles which are made to collide each other.

The meaning of singkil is “to entangle the feet with disturbing objects such as vines or anything in your path”. Thus, bamboo poles are set to a rhythmic beat.

The dance has become one of the distinguished dances in many Filipino cultural presentations all over the world, even in a few cultural gatherings held by the Filipino community in Saudi Arabia.

Madain Saleh, the ancient wonder kept in the far lands of Madinah, is an old settlement of the Nabatean Kingdom. Madain Saleh was the biggest settlement after the famous Petra found in Jordan at that era.

Over a hundred enormous tombs, cut in boulders, give the place its awesome archeological marvel. 131 monuments with elaborate architectural details have been proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO] as Saudi Arabia’s first World Heritage Site.

Though the place has been ill-described by the Quran as a place of idol worship and place smitten by Allah with earthquake and lightning, this wonder is a tourist spot a visiting Filipino should never miss.

Saudi men and women are complementary opposites. Predominantly, women dress in an abaya, a loose black cloak covering the body with their heads covered by a hijab and faces covered with a boshiya. Men, on the other hand, wear a thobe, a loose white garment partnered with a ghutra, the red and white scarf worn over their heads.

They pretty much make a whole like these cute salt and pepper shakers. I just find it ironic that black peppers come out from the ‘male’ salt shaker and the white salt from the ‘female’.

Sandstorm in Riyadh eclipses sunlight

The Saudi Arabian capital experienced heavy sandstorm late afternoon yesterday, covering surroundings in a cloud of dust.

According to Arabnews.com, Riyadh was “totally dark” as the storm swept into the city.

In an interview, Benny Quiambao, witnessed the one-meter horizontal visibility of the sorm. “Darkness enveloped the main arteries of the capital,” he said.

Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) had earlier warned that a sandstorm was approaching Riyadh and the Director General for Health Affairs had ordered hospitals to be ready for a surge of “dust-hit patients”.

Enjoy all of Iloilo at CCP for 20 pesos

Overseas Filipino Workers [OFWs] coming home to the Philippines this weekend can relive Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival and other Ilonggo performances at the Cultural Center of the Philippines [CCP] in Manila with a twenty-peso ticket for CCP’s “see all you can”.

CCP will showcase all of Iloilo’s best at its Pasinaya 2012. According to CCP, the festival is touted as “the largest multi-arts festival in the country.” Some 5,000 artists and 300 shows are scheduled to happen in one day.

The biggest performance will be the Dinagyang Festival in which Tribu Lunok of Iloilo City National High School, a winner in Iloilo’s Dinagyang, will perform. A long roster of performances will come from the University of Santo Tomas [UST] Symphony Orchestra, Philippine Ballet Theatre, Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, Tanghalang Pilipino, Ballet Philippines, Philippine Madrigal Singers, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, National Music Competitions for Young Artists, and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

According to CCP’s blog site, a roster of activities will be offered including exhibits, film screenings, puppet shows, and a culinary fair among many others.
